Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Center for Medical Weight Loss?
The Center for Medical Weight Loss (CMWL) is the largest network of weight loss physicians in the country. It was founded by Dr. Michael Kaplan of New York, a leading physician in the practice and research of bariatric medicine. There are now over 265 centers in the CMWL network across the country. As a testimony to the success of CMWL’s programs, research has shown in a sample study of CMWL patients that 97% of the patients lose weight and maintain the weight loss after two years (unlike many other weight loss programs.)

Tell us about The Center for Medical Weight Loss in Santa Fe.
Dr. Lynore Martinez, medical director and owner of Santa Fe Ob/Gyn, is overseeing the medical weight loss program out of her current practice near St. Vincent’s Hospital. She and her medical team have received complete training and support from Dr. Michael Kaplan, medical director for the national program, to run a successful weight management practice. Dr. Martinez has been interested in offering a medical weight loss option for the Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico community for a number of years because of the many patients in her Ob/Gyn practice who are frustrated with their weight issues. She researched the options extensively before deciding that The Center for Medical Weight Loss offered the best medically-based weight loss program available.

Why is a medically supervised weight loss program so important?
Medical weight loss is faster and safer than standard diets because you are under the care of a medical provider throughout the course of your treatment. Weight loss physicians can use medications and diet tools not available in commercial or self directed diets. As weight loss occurs, many patients may need and want adjustments to their existing drugs (e.g. reductions in medications for diabetic patients). Additionally many patients may be on medications that contribute to weight gain issues, and these may be substituted for a better option. We will coordinate medication dosing with your primary care physician. The extensive experience of physicians in counseling their patients over the years also make them very qualified for the behavioral counseling that is very important in CMWL’s program for long-term patient success.

How many weight loss programs do you have?
The Center for Medical Weight Loss offers three basic weight loss program options. The program that offers the fastest results is a Low Calorie Diet which is achieved by meal replacement products – shakes, protein bars and soups - offered at our office. Each weight loss program is individualized based on your needs and requirements and includes personal counseling and a recommendation for exercise. A fourth option, ordering CMWL meals online for delivery to the patients’ homes, will be available soon. See our Overview of Programs for more information on these programs.

How do I start and how much does the program cost?
Patients will initially see Dr. Martinez or a member of her highly trained medical staff, including our nurse practitioner Dianne Paolazzi, for an initial consultation to determine the patient’s objectives, body composition and physical condition. We will then review with the patient the weight loss programs that are most appropriate, their cost, and a projection of how much weight the patient can expect to lose. The cost of this initial consultation is $49, and you are under no obligation to start a program.

Do I have to be extremely overweight to consider the Center for Medical Weight Loss? What if I only need to lose 10-15 pounds?
Programs at CMWL weight loss centers are not simply for people who are extremely overweight, but are for anyone who is unhappy or feels unhealthy due to their weight. We will tell you if you don't need to lose weight or if you don't qualify for CMWL weight loss programs for any reason. Our first priority is your overall health and well being.
